Personal Driver 419 Scam - Craigslist

CAUTION
Job Seekers.

I've received a number of emails from foreign "businessmen"  and "professionals" claiming to need a personal driver during their visit to the USA. Usually they want me to meet them up at the airport, and they say they'll pay for the vehicle or rental car. In exchange for my personal driver services, they're offering the kind of money only strippers and lawyers make.

This is common advance-payment / overpayment scam.
Basically works like this:

1. You agree to be their driver and give them your name & address.

2. They quickly mail you a bogus check. It'll probably be a cashiers check for several thousand dollars.

3. Once you've deposited the check in your account, the scammers say they accidentally overpaid you, or their plans changed and they no longer require your services, but they want their money back. They want you to wire either a portion or the full sum of the fake check back to them or to someone else, for whatever bullshit reason they give. They might also threaten you with a lawsuit or say they'll call the cops if you don't immediately wire the cash.

4. You wire the money (western union, moneygram) to the requested recipient.

5. The phony check they sent eventually bounces and you're left holding the bag. Whatever money you sent is gone forever, your bank will hold you liable, and you might face criminal charges or be investigated for check fraud.
_____________________________________________

These predators might also try to get your banking info and password, to directly e-deposit the money instead of mail a paper check. Then steal every last penny in your bank account, and probably steal your identity as well, and make all kinds of expensive purchases in your name.
If you gave them your name and Social Security number, it might already be too late.

    7. You can only string these fools along until they provide more info, ie: phone numbers, names and mailing address they want you to wire the refund to (your money obviously). But at that point you're already getting your hands dirty. My advice is maybe forward their emails to IC3 or FTC and back out. Dump the info you gathered on the web, like I do, so others can find it and avoid getting scammed.

  4. I have recently been contacted on several occasions by "Kevin Stark". They have a new twist on the scam. He is claiming to be the CEO of MNCs Group and trying to hire a personal assistant for his heavy workload! The pay is $500 weekly and as in the other cases, the money will be wired to your account. In these emails he is asking for your resume as well as your name, address (no p.o boxes) and your city.

  9. I just recently replied to one of those driver ads as well. Lucky for me I got a legitimate answer from none other than Jimmy Olson himself. I had no idea he was now working on an oil rig in North Dakota - times must have been hard since he was fired from the Daily Planet. His mom (who is in need of being driven around) evidently had to move from Metropolis to Chicago. Who would have known!

Actually, all sarcasm aside, this is really no laughing matter. In my case, the scammer didn't realize that Jimmy Olson was better known as Superman's Pal and should have picked a different alias. Unfortunately in other cases, people do get taken in.

I want to thank the blogger here for investigating these scams. Having a place where people who are not sure can check if that offer is really legit or just a scam may save someone a lot of grief.

So for purposes of info and making this particular scam show up more in searches (which is how I found this blog), I'll paste the whole thing below. One other give-a-way for the email is the misuse of words ("temporal" instead of "temporary") and syntax that would be unlikely from an oil driller in North Dakota ("I would be looking forward to having a better service from you.").

Here's the original ad (Chicago Reader online):

    "Need a Driver
    Full-time, Part-time | $480"

"A driver is needed urgently in assisting with some of our daily routine. You are require to be dependable, reliable and dedicated. If you are interested, forward your resume and a cover letter to (hiringadriver@gmail.com)"

    Here's the email:

"Thanks for the email and interest in the driving job. My name is Jimmy Olson. I will like to let you know that this is a permanent job, it could also be temporal depending on your schedule. You will be driving her around for only 3 days in a week within the city (Mon, Wed & Fri)scheduled for 8 hours (9am - 5pm) each day.
You are required to be dependable, dedicated, honest, loyal and trustworthy. I am willing to provide a 2009 Ford Escape. You will be offered $19.00/hr. I would be sending you extra funds, that would cover a week's salary and the balance would go to the Mover's Agency that would bring the car (2009 Ford Escape) over to you. It will be greatly appreciated if you accept this offer. I will look forward to having a better service from you.

I would be waiting for your reply and thank you for your interest to work for us.

    Thanks,
    Michael.

    Hello ,

Thanks for the response. The job is yours. I would be paying $19 per hour and you would drive my Mom 8 hours a day and at-least 3 days in a week depending on your schedule . I am going to send you a day payment as well as some money to move the car over because that is the car my Mom wants to be driven in.
Please be informed that you would receive a check for your upfront payment and the balance would go to the Mover's agency because they would bring the car that you would use to drive my Mom. I want to make sure you are okay with that.
The Job would start 11/28/2014 because Mom is currently in Las Vegas . After the Mover's agency has received the funds and sent the car over. I would have loved to call you so that we talk but due to my work policy mobile phones are not allowed. I would keep you posted on things. I would come over to Philadelphia when I'm on leave in December, I would really love to meet you.
I believe in your interest to work for us and I do promise to satisfy your needs.

    Regards,
    Michael.
P.S : Kindly respond to this email so I can know you've also accept this position and I can end my search.

  25. I`m experiencing the same type of "Driver needed ASAP scam" from a CL post. Sounded as if it could be bogus from the beginning. Very good money for an extended period of time, plus bonus money for overtime! Requested additional information regarding any agency involved with hiring, but received only more details about payments. I`m glad I did a little checking on the internet and found your blog. Thanks

Just post the important details: Name, email & contact phone # if you have them, and general job description, vehicle make/model if you want. That's the info people will be Googling to find their way here. Thanks!

  29. A co-worker looking for part time work replied to an Ad on Craigslist got an email back that was this scam. He is new to the US and his English isn't so good so he asked me about it. I read through the reply told him it was a scam and showed him this site. Its an ongoing scam apparently from the dates of these posts.

    1. A reply to a job shouldn't be more then a few sentences.
    2. A reply to a job interview that is 3 paragraphs long isn't a reply to a job interview. Especially for something as simple as shuttling some one around.
    3. Anytime you get an email for work you should ask yourself why do they need a stranger to drive around their wife/mother/grandmother/aunt/sister or whatever while there are other, safer and more cost effective ways to do it.

This scam is designed to ensnare greedy people, desperate people, and naive people.

Canada" offer me was generous but not overwhelming to the point where I would not trust it, so that is why i proceeded with the emails and txt messages until I received the check today for a large amount. the check surprised me and I decided to do search the name and as I scrolled down I found this life saving blog. it should be on the first page of google search once you enter the names of these criminals. From FrankNYC

Apparently he is deaf so no phone communications(no surprise here) I found it strange the amount of money I would get paid for 10 total hours of work. i did my research and found this page. 1. It's good you did your homework. Don't give the sob your address to mail a fake check. Since he is deaf and cannot talk on the phone, ask him to text you from the airport on Nov 12th when he arrives in town for his "charity work, seminars and a little holiday" and is ready to send that Mercedes SUV over to pick his new personal driver up. Tell "Dr. James Frieden" NO CHECKS, cash in hand only or the deal is off.

If you have any doubts this is a scam? Email whoever sent you the check and tell them you deposited it. I guarantee they will ask you to wire money back. That's how this scam works ;)

She was going to rent a 2014 Mercedes G63 AMG. She wanted to pay me in advance. Bad part of this story is that I deposited the check n it actually cleared. But I haven't touched the funds, just letting it sit in my acct. but kinda paranoid now of how long it will take the bank to find out it's bogus. What should I do?? Should I go n tell the bank the circumstances??? HELP

    1. As I posted here my best advice is visit your bank manager in person and explain you believe you were scammed and the check is fake. Just because the check "cleared" does not mean it's good. It will bounce soon. The issuing bank will not pay your bank and the check will be returned. So do NOT withdraw funds on that check. And do NOT wire any money to the sender. Also consider filing a police report. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

I thought indeed was a creditable resourse to find work and I have a job waiting for me to start only to find out after looking into this that I'm probally being scammed. I gave copy and pasted the whole message that I recieved just last week. I'm a struggling gather of 5 girls and wanted to believe my prayers have been finally answered only ti find out it has to be to a fraud.
